Through music, history and the arts the Faubourg Treme History & Heritage Festival celebrates the ongoing legacy of the Treme and its impact on local and international culture.

While the Treme is undergoing many cultural changes it is more important now than ever to preserve and perpetuate the rich cultural legacies borne of the creative genius of generations of people who first settled in Treme and throughout its history. Local entrepreneurs, artists, musicians, political leaders, civil rights activists, families and individuals have contributed to it’s world renowned reputation.

TREME - CONNECTING HISTORY AND CULTURE:

• Celebrated as the ‘oldest African American neighborhood in the United States’, the Treme is culturally unique and impactful

• Congo Square

• The Historic Faubourg Treme is internationally recognised as "the Birthplace of Jazz"

• Treme has a vibrant, rich and deep histories involving Native Americans, Spanish and French Colonials, Haitian Creoles, enslaved Africans and the first free people of color in the United States

• Part of the civil rights trail - the Homer Plessy supreme court case was planned here

• Beautiful architecture, creole cottages, townhouses and villas, and green space

• Social and pleasure clubs that grace the neighborhood streets with second line celebrations

• Arts and culture institutions, community organizations, Jazz and Heritage Foundation, the Mahalia Jackson Theater and the New Orleans African American Museum
